Collaborative robots – called Cobots – are a class of robots designed specifically for safe collaboration with human workers.
They typically have a low payload from about 0.5 kg up to 10 kg and short reach up to around 1 m.
They are designed to limit forces excerted on humans in case of unintented contact, i.e. they need to stop quickly in case of a collision. This limits their payload and speed.
This also limits their use to specific applications.
Most of the safety technolgies used in these cobots do not scale to heavier robots.
